- GOVERNMENT ISSUES NEW REGULATIONS
ON PUBLICATIONS FROM CUBA, IRAN, AND SUDAN
Publishers' and Authors' Groups
End Litigation that Prompted Change
New York, NY (October 1, 2007)—Publishers' and authors' groups announced today that they have successfully resolved their lawsuit against the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control ("OFAC"), because OFAC has revised its regulations in response to the suit and no longer requires specific license applications for government permission to engage in certain basic publishing activities. Before the suit was filed in September 2004, OFAC, which enforces U.S. trade embargoes against "enemy" nations, had effectively prohibited Americans from publishing works written by authors in Cuba, Iran and Sudan by requiring prior approval through the issuance of a government license. - Are You Ready for ISBN-13?
The ISBN (International Standard Book Number) provides a standard way to identify books in global trade. On January 1, 2007 the book industry transitioned to 13-digit ISBNs, phasing out the use of 10-digit numbers.
Why did the ISBN change? The change to 13 digits was needed in order to expand the numbering capacity of the ISBN system and alleviate numbering shortages in certain areas of the world. Also, by changing the ISBN to 13 digits, the book industry has fully aligned the numbering system for books with the global GTIN identification system that is widely used to identify most other consumer goods worldwide. - Gene Therapy: Managing Workflow: How Top Publishers Keep Their Houses in Order
By Eugene G. Schwartz (Book Business Magazine)
It was only 26 years ago that Leonard Shatzkin, the legendary, former Doubleday manufacturing director and industry consultant, wrote that the book industry’s use of computers to “measure the effect of forces amenable to management’s control … is close to zero” (“In Cold Type,” 1982, Houghton Mifflin). The last 25 years have seen the deficiencies discussed by Shatzkin dramatically addressed, and he would have to be impressed at the pervasive uses of the computer today. Read more...February 1, 2008
- The ‘Green’ TEAM
By James Sturdivant
According to one of the better-known accounts in the compendium of humankind’s greatest achievements, it was in the year 105 that a Chinese man named Ts’ai Lun invented paper, mashing up wood from a mulberry tree with fiber from bamboo. Thus was born a technology that would literally change the world, making possible artistic, scientific and religious revolutions, democratizing literacy and learning, and ushering humanity into the modern age. Glatfelter Awarded Triple Chain-of-Custody Forestry Certifications.
Glatfelter, a leading global supplier of specialty papers and engineered products, has earned multi-site chain-of-custody certification in its North American production facilities in Spring Grove, PA and Chillicothe, OH, for the following three forestry standards.
The new triple forestry certification provides assurance that Glatfelter has implemented responsible forest management to its longstanding policies, and that chain-of-custody procedures exist to pass certified fiber from the forest, through the manufacturing processes, and onto customers and end-users.
What is forestry certification?
Forestry certification is a "seal of approval" awarded to forestry operations that adopt environmentally and socially responsible forestry practices and to companies that process and sell products made from certified wood. Forestry certification provides both customers and consumers with the reassurance that the wood products they purchase come from non-controversial sources.
Why is sustainable forestry important?
Managed forests make a vital contribution to the world by providing economic, environmental, and social benefits indispensable to quality of life. Sustainably managed forests provide many benefits to society: employment for hundreds of thousands of workers, a viable tax base that supports thousands of communities, essential building and paper products, and numerous recreational opportunities. A commitment to provide these social benefits extends to promoting human health and safety; providing employee training and education; protecting air and water quality, soil, and wildlife; protecting unique resources; and communicating the benefits of the practice of sustainable forestry to the general public.

At a recent Pennsylvania school meeting involving parents, teachers, students and administrators, a 5th grader stood up and asked why their school didn't have enough textbooks.
